We had the opportunity to observe the planting of "Haru yo Koi" wheat flour seeds at Onishi Farm's fields.

On the hills of Biei, where the chilly spring breeze still blows, spring farm work has finally begun.

The fields, once covered in snow during the winter, have completely transformed, and tractors are carefully sowing seeds in the soft, fluffy soil. The soft lines drawn straight across the soil by the tractors are striking, and you can feel that the beautiful rolling hills of Biei are made possible by nature and the efforts of many people who cherish it.

"Haru yo Koi" is a wheat variety developed in Hokkaido, characterized by its gentle sweetness and ease of use. When used in bread and pastries, it enhances the flavor of the other ingredients while resulting in a light and airy texture.

As the landscape of the fields gradually changes at this time of year, I felt that spring is definitely approaching Biei.

Biei Town, Hokkaido

[Onishi Farm] Tomoki Onishi

He is the group leader of the "Braummann's Sky Garden" project, an initiative to bring agriculture and tourism together in Biei, Hokkaido. As a leader and pioneer among young farmers in Biei, he continues to produce high-quality wheat on his vast farmland of several hectares.

Mr. Onishi cultivates wheat without using any glyphosate-based herbicides or neonicotinoid insecticides, producing wheat that is safe for both consumers and the natural environment. Biei Town is located in the Kamikawa Basin, which has a large temperature difference between day and night, even within Hokkaido. It is said that the wheat absorbs a lot of nutrients from the sunlight during the day and stores them in the grain during the cooler nights, resulting in delicious wheat.
